چکیده

In this paper, we present a cable mechanism which synthesizes a nonlinear rotational spring from a linear spring. The nonlinearity is realized by winding the cable around a spool which has a varying radius. We show that for a given nonlinear torque profile (synthesis objective) there is an explicit geometric expression of the shape of the spool which synthesizes this profile. We present the geometry of the problem, explain the method to calculate the shape of the spool, and show an example of synthesis.

Design and Realization of a Non-Circular Cable Spool to Synthesize a Nonlinear Rotational Spring

In this paper we present a cable mechanism that realizes a nonlinear rotational spring from a linear translational spring. The spring is pulled by a cable wound around a non-circular spool, which is rigidly attached to the joint. The non-circular shape of the spool induces a nonlinear relationship between its angular position and the torque created by the tension of the cable. Depending on the ...

Numerical solution of base shear in high tensioned cable antenna

A finite element solution based on equevalent elements is proposed for the static and dynamic analysis of tallhigh tensioned cable antennas. To reduce high number of degrees of freedom in space frame body of a structure, a simple equivalent beam element is defined for each simulative substructure. This numerical procedure is applicable to analyze complex three dimensional assemblies of substruc...

Optimal Design of Nonlinear Series Elastic Actuator for Minimization of Actuator Power

In this paper, we propose a methodology to optimize the nonlinear stiffness of nonlinear Series Elastic Actuators (SEAs). The nonlinear restoring forces of the springs are optimized in order to minimize the mechanical power of the actuators of the SEAs. We define the cost function as the time average of the square of the actuator power, and use a 3 order Hermite interpolation to parameterize th...

Nonlinear Vibration Analysis of the Composite Cable using Perturbation Method and the Green-Lagrangian Nonlinear Strain

In this study, nonlinear vibration of a composite cable is investigated by considering nonlinear stress-strain relations. The composite cable is composed of an aluminum wire as reinforcement and a rubber coating as matrix. The nonlinear governing equations of motion are derived about to an initial curve and based on the fundamentals of continuum mechanics and the nonlinear Green-Lagrangian stra...

Behavioral Optimization of Pseudo-Neutral Hole in Hyperelastic Membranes Using Functionally graded Cables

Structures consisting of cables and membranes have been of interest to engineers due to their higher ratio of strength to weight and lower cost compared to other structures. One of the challenges in such structures is presence of holes in membranes, which leads to non-uniform stress and strain distributions, even under uniform far-field deformations. One of the approaches suggested for controll...
